What happened?
What everybody will remember about the 2012 Fuji Rock Festival is the beautiful sunny weather that lasted for the duration of the festival including the pre-party on the Thursday evening. While "Fuji Rock = Rain" was close to becoming an established fact of reality, the bright smiles of all festival goers enjoying the sunny weather were unforgettable.
The year even started with a premonition of something special. The Festival made news by announcing performers earlier then ever before with Radiohead early in the year and the announcement The Stone Roses were to play coinciding with their own announcement to reform the previous year. The premonition lead to what was simply an amazing line-up of headliners: the miracle revival of The Stone Roses, the whole festival singing along with Noel Gallagher, and the long awaited, by both fan and staff, performance of Radiohead. Not to mention what amounted to a celebration of the London Olympics with performances by top UK artists such as Beady Eye, The Specials and Elvis Costello, and prominant artists like Jack White, James Blake and Ed Sheeran performing around the festival along side big name domestic acts such as Yosui Inoue, Denki Groove and Sakanaction, gave the festival one of the richest line ups to date.
It must have been a reaction to the line up. Tickets for Saturday July 28th and Sunday the 29th both sold out making the year the biggest selling year of the festival. Also,after ten years of offering advanced ticketing, tickets were sold at a discounted price during pre-sales this year.
Fuji Rock aims for the symbiosis of music and nature and addresses this is many different ways through environmental projects. Through the Fuji Rock Forest Project started in 2011 with the cooperation of Naeba, the town of Yuzawa and Niigata Prefecture, the festival works to protect the lush forests surrounding the festival site and continues to expand with the support of festival goers with events such as the Board Walk Camp. The Festival also continues to offer the chance to discuss conversion to natural energy sources by hosting the anti-atomic, anti-nuclear event, "The Atomic Cafe". The year, with the blessing of beautiful weather, was a year to refelct once more on the import of protecting the environment.
As part of the "Benefit for Nippon" Great East Japan Earthquake Relief Project, the festival collected donations again this year to support the areas effected by the disaster. A great number of attendees graciously gave money to the donation boxes set up throughout the festival. Also, chairs autographed by artists who performed at the Green Stage were put up for auction. The Fuji Rock Festival Organizing Commitee donated the following funds gathered at the festival and the charity auction; <Donation Total > ¥8,765,948 <Donee> Fukushima Prefecture Disaster Response Headquarters <Donated> Sep. 13th and Oct. 17th, 2012
